Chapter 15 - 07/09/2007
OK, so with the back of the yard starting t take shape, it is time to start getting the township of Summiton looking more like a township.
I have made a base of 3mm ply to ensure that the main area is flat and level. I am using Faller street rolls. These come in a one metre roll and are around the ten dollar mark. I am using two different types for the township. The main street type I have used is a conventional roadway with the lines pre-marked.
I have also used a plain asphalt surface that has been used for lesser roads and car parks within the town itself.

To represent the gutters, I have used Plastruct T section mounted upside down. This has been painted with Polly Scale Concrete grey. Having done this, the intention is to make a footpath that's raised by 0.080” (2mm).
I’ve also placed some of the semi completed buildings into position to get a rough idea of how the township will look. This is the best time to start changing things around.
After having placed some scenery along the Northern approach to the township, I have positioned the church onto its pad. This was done during the plastering stage to ensure a flat base for mounting the building. I’ve used Atlas picket fencing around the outskirts of the church. I intend to put a few mourners at a grave site soon.
I’ll be using Woodland Scenics people for this, but that’s for another chapter.

Whilst waiting for all of this to dry, I did some random detailing around the rest of the layout. Such as painting and weathering the old signal cabin at Holman Loop. I will get around to putting an interior in this over the next chapter or two.
I have also been inviting a few mates from town to operate the layout.
This has been a valuable lesson in design practicality and has shown that whilst the layout of the switches for points and signals may have seemed fairly logical and straight forward at the time, seems to be causing major mental anguish for other operators whilst they try and get there head around all those switches.

So after Jade having to run around with a bucket and mop to wipe up the dribble of confused operators, it was decided to get in an start on building the dispatch panel.

But that’s another chapter for next time… We shall see how we go.
