Chapter 30 - 10/07/2008

Well we’ve been and gone from our third Toowoomba show. All in all it was a great show. As I’ve mentioned it isn’t the biggest, but it is the most enjoyable. So thanks to all those who came along and said “G’day”. Thanks also to Ted and all the others from the DDMRC for putting on a great show.

Now back to the layout!

As many of you know, Jade has been in the hospital to get an operation to see if

we can get her to see things my way. Unfortunately, this objective could not be met so she is back same as always and giving me grief. Whilst she was recuperating however I managed to get a bit of work done on “Hillbilly House”, this is a house we have positioned high in the hill behind Holman Passing Loop.
Due to the fact that it is going to be fairly well camouflaged by trees, I am intending on making this little scene have some “interest”. We may put one of Noch’s “Sexy Scenes” (and people say the Germans have no sense of humor) in the house… We’ll jump off that bridge when we get to it.
I still have to position the lights inside the building (note the hole in the layout underneath for the wires to run through) and then I need to add some more stumps. Those you can see are matchsticks and are there to ensure it is level. Ever since I was doing architectural model making, I have had a love for buildings that are not on a level plot.
This is one little tip I learned in my previous job, but have not seen very much on layouts.
The method I use is to make the building and then mark out the footprint on the ground. Once this is done, I drill a hole for the corner posts to be positioned in. After this, fit the posts to the building and test fit them to make sure they line up with the holes.
Once the building is ready to be glued into position, you can add all the other
posts as they are not required (usually) as load bearing posts. I use a similar method for doing this with brick or concrete buildings. Again mark out the footprint and then cut out the footprint with a dremel or similar. Then you can make a flat based to sit inside the resultant hole and sit the building in place.
As you can no doubt tell, it’s a simple process, but it makes the world of difference to the realism of your layout.
Since we last put chapter to website, Jade and I have been busy making more trees as well. We have found a new method for doing these, that I think looks even better than the original method. But you’ll have to wait for the next chapter to find out about our new breed of SUPER TREES!

That’s right super trees, able to ward of intruders by “barking” and so the bad puns continue or at least they would if Jade wasn’t threatening me with bodily harm if I continue.

We shall see how we go.
